Language learning is a commodity. You can google a definition, translate a sentence, or find a cheap teacher on Preply or iTalki. Live translation will keep improving, and eventually you won't even need to do those things. AI can do it all for you. Information is cheap.
Where does this put me?
People come to me looking to improve their English. But the truth is, I'm not the best option for that. You could get a lot more hours with a cheaper tutor, and a list of vocab words from GPT. I've never had a client tell me, "Kevin increased my English by X." What I have heard is: Kevin has made me more confident. Kevin gives me a chance to reflect on my work. Kevin makes me feel relaxed and welcomed.
What do I actually do? I'm a teacher and a thinking partner. My job is to help you feel better and more capable in your work, in your own skin, in your place amongst changing technologies, and as a human. We work on how to think clearly, how to analyze meaning, how to find your own sense of confidence, and how to connect across cultures. Intelligence is just one part of being human. We focus on the feelings of confidence, connection and curiosity.
We work in English because it's my wheelhouse, and because for Japanese professionals I think it's the cleanest, quickest way to find a new mentality and approach. A translation app can carry your sentence, but it can't make you someone the room wants to hear from.
This isn't just an English class. It's a career deep dive into who you are and what you need. And it isn't coaching because something is wrong with you. It's for people who are already doing well and want room to grow.
What this looks like
- On the surface: English phrases you can use at work tomorrow
- One layer down: How to think clearly and get your point across
- Further down: Confidence, and a clearer sense of who you are at work
- At the core: An hour that's just for you, where you feel heard
That's why I call it Business English + Career Training. Two paths, English and careers, and they mix. It's for people who want to communicate better, feel more confident, feel more like themselves, discover their own career potential and understand strategy, and it just so happens to be through English.
Kevin
